I sobbed in the shower because I couldn’t bear to touch my own body at 19 stone – now I’m a size 8 and I finally feel like ME

Teacher Becka Gill lost over 10 stone after gastric sleeve surgery and Mounjaro jabs. She went from a size 24 to a size 8 and says she can finally smile at her reflection.

Becka Gill used to cry in the shower because she did not want to touch her own body.

She cancelled plans because nothing fitted. She stopped dating because she did not like herself enough to let anyone else try.

On a night out, a man called her fat to her face and told his friend to come away from her.

She was 19 stone 3lbs, a size 24, and 34 years old. She is now a size 8.

“I didn’t respond but it cut deep,” the teacher from Congleton, Cheshire, told CreatorZine.

Surgery, a setback, then Mounjaro

Gill’s weight loss did not follow a straight line. She spent £3,000 on a gastric sleeve in Turkey in July 2022, which helped her lose six stone.

Then she regained one. The frustration was significant.

She worried she would never reach a weight she felt comfortable at.

In January 2025, she started Mounjaro alongside sustainable lifestyle changes. The combination worked.

She has now lost 10 stone 2lbs in total over three years.

She knows both decisions attract criticism. She has heard it plenty.

“People are quick to tell me I’ve taken the easy way out,” she said.

“But unless you’ve actually been through this journey you don’t actually realise how difficult it actually is and how much work you have to put in if you’re doing it properly.”

“I had a fear of eating in public”

Before the weight loss, Gill’s life had shrunk around her. She avoided mirrors, abandoned her social life, and dreaded being seen eating.

“I had a fear of eating in public because I wondered what people would think of a big girl eating food,” she said.

“It meant I wasn’t able to date because I didn’t like myself. I felt self conscious anywhere I went.”

The abuse from strangers made it worse. The man on the night out was not an isolated incident.

Being publicly shamed for her appearance became something she expected.

Ordering clothes that actually fit

Gill is now focused on toning and working out, but she says the real change is not physical. It is the fact that she can order clothes online and they fit when they arrive.

That she goes to the gym and enjoys it. That she looks in the mirror and smiles.

“I still don’t really believe I can order clothes and have them fit perfectly when they arrive,” she said.

“No sending things back, no second-guessing sizes. It feels surreal.”

She describes herself as happier than she has ever been. “I find joy in the smallest things now. I laugh more and I romanticise everyday moments. For the first time in a long time, I feel like me.”

Why it matters

Gill’s story sits at the centre of two of the most debated topics in health content right now: weight loss surgery and GLP-1 medications like Mounjaro.

Both attract fierce opinion online, and creators who talk openly about using them face predictable backlash.

But accounts like Gill’s, where the before is not just a number on a scale but a life defined by shame, avoidance and public cruelty, cut through the noise in ways that abstract debates about willpower do not.

For creators covering health and body image, the demand for honest, unglamorous transformation stories continues to outstrip the supply.

Mounjaro and similar medications are reshaping the weight loss content landscape, with more creators sharing their experiences publicly and forcing conversations about what counts as legitimate and what counts as cheating.

Gill is not interested in that argument.

She is a size 8, she goes to the gym, and she can eat in public without wondering who is watching. That is enough.
