Yeferson Cossio has 12.5 million Instagram followers, a fleet of luxury cars and legs that were surgically lengthened by three inches.

He has now also been banned by an airline for using a fart machine on a transatlantic flight.

The Colombian influencer allegedly activated a device that produced realistic flatulence sounds and an unpleasant smell on an Avianca flight from Bogotá to Madrid on 11 March.

He was reportedly filming the prank for social media content.

The video has never been posted. The airline announced legal proceedings against him yesterday.

What happened over the Atlantic

According to Avianca, Cossio was seen activating the fart machine during the flight with the intention of provoking reactions from other passengers.

At least one female traveller was reported to be deeply offended by the stunt.

The airline’s statement referenced section 8.6 of their terms and conditions, covering “conduct that affects safety, comfort, order and discipline on the aircraft.”

They noted that the prank took place while the aircraft was flying over the Atlantic Ocean, during a stretch of the journey where an emergency landing was not possible due to the distance to the nearest airport.

Avianca stressed that in a pressurised cabin with recirculated air, the act posed a direct risk to other passengers.

“Avianca categorically rejects any behaviour that jeopardises the safety of its operations and compromises the onboard experience for customers and service personnel,” the statement read.

Cossio has been banned from his return flight. He has not responded publicly to the legal threat.

Not his first headline

Cossio is no stranger to extreme decisions made in the name of content. In 2023, he underwent a leg-lengthening operation, growing from 5ft 8in to 6ft 1in.

He described it at the time as “the most painful surgery in the entire world” and also “one of the most expensive.”

He relied on crutches and a wheelchair for over a year during recovery.

He said the operation was partly motivated by injuries sustained in an accident years earlier.

The tattooed influencer from Antioquia is known for a luxury lifestyle that he documents for his enormous following.

A fart machine on a commercial flight represents a somewhat different register.

Why it matters

Prank content on aeroplanes occupies a space that airlines are increasingly unwilling to tolerate.

A pressurised cabin at 35,000 feet over the Atlantic is not a studio.

There is no cutting the scene, no second take, and no way to leave if someone’s content makes the environment unbearable for the people trapped in it.

Avianca’s decision to pursue legal action rather than simply issue a ban signals that carriers are done treating in-flight stunts as minor disruptions.

For creators with large followings who view commercial flights as potential content opportunities, the calculation has changed. The video Cossio filmed has not been posted.

The legal proceedings are public. The airline got more coverage from the ban than Cossio would have got from the clip.

That outcome alone may make the next influencer think twice before pressing play on a fart machine at 40,000 feet.
