Uwu Tofu took up astrology to prove it was nonsense.
It became her job instead.
The 29-year-old from Texas was studying philosophy a decade ago when she noticed classmates letting their star signs run their lives. She found it maddening.
“All these astrology memes were circulating at college and it annoyed me because I couldn’t believe people would be so stupid to trust them,” she said.
“I didn’t believe you could genuinely categorise people into 12 signs; it made no sense.”
So she went looking for the flaw. She never found it.
“I persisted in finding out more because astrology has been around for thousands of years, but I needed to know why,” she said.
“Astrology is the biggest can of worms I’ve ever encountered and now I’ve been obsessed for 10 years.”
The side hustle that got out of hand
Tofu, who now has 527,000 Instagram followers, admits the timing helped.
“I was a college kid at the time and still trying to figure out who I was going to be. Astrology is perfect for that because it gives you the tools to work it out,” she said.
“I accidentally became a professional astrologer. It was supposed to be a cute little side hustle and quickly became my main hustle.”
She built a following on Tumblr first, then took it to Twitter, now X, where she turned professional.
During the pandemic she began charging around $110 for one-to-one readings lasting between an hour and 90 minutes.
Most of her clients were women. She says she ran about three sessions a day, five days a week.
“Astrology is really empowering to understand – it’s like magic and I wanted to spread that to others, which is why I started consultations and studied it all more,” she said.
She says the work also earned her a scholarship to NORWAC, an astrology conference in Seattle.
“I can tell people what their true calling really is”
The former sceptic now speaks about birth charts with total conviction.
She says a chart reveals personality, relationships, family and career.
“I’ve spoken to people who believe there’s one career that fits them but when I look at their charts, I know they need to make a change,” she said.
“I’ve spotted things in charts where I instantly know someone doesn’t like their parents and why. I make people feel seen – it’s euphoric.”
Her philosophy lecturers would presumably have questions.
From birth charts to £15,000 a month
Tofu started making content in February 2021, and it soon became her full-time career.
Once she felt comfortable on camera, she moved into adult content.
She says she now earns £15,000 a month.
“One time I made $1,500 (£1,100) for a three-hour phone call with a client – it was like a Christopher Nolan movie length,” she said.
“Sometimes the chat is instantly sexual, and I prefer that to be done and gone, but some of my clients look for a deeper emotional connection.”
She rations her time with fans. “Some creators will chat 24/7 but I limit how much I talk to my fans, for my own sanity,” she said.
“Talking to anyone for a long time is a lot, even for the most extroverted type of person.”
Online Tofu and the real one
Tofu describes herself as an introvert who unwinds with crochet and gaming.
For paying customers, she turns the volume up.
“Online Tofu is more extroverted and an amplified version of me; I’m just a little quieter in real life,” she said.
“On the outside everything is sunshine and rainbows, but no one knows that in my spare time I like to read really sad things.”
“That’s a cute opinion… next?”
Critics of her career get short shrift.
“People should find a better use of their energy. They’re just jealous of my success,” she told Creatorzine.
“A lot of people have a lot of opinions, but that doesn’t mean every opinion matters.
“I act like a brat online, so when I’m met with hate I say, ‘that’s a cute opinion… next?’”
Why It Matters
Tofu’s route is a familiar one in the creator economy, even if the starting point isn’t.
She built trust in one niche, turned that audience into paying clients, then moved them onto a platform where the money scales with attention rather than hours.
The astrology readings capped her at roughly 15 sessions a week.
Subscription content has no such ceiling.
Astrology has become one of the most reliable engines of online engagement, and plenty of creators now treat a spiritual niche as a front door to broader income streams.
Tofu says she still reads charts. Whether the stars predicted the career change is between her and her birth chart.
