There is a moment in Yasmin El Moutaouahidi’s TikTok where the camera sweeps across Balos Lagoon looking for a gap in the crowd.
It doesn’t find one.
The footage, shared by the creator after a visit to the Greek beauty spot, shows holidaymakers packed along the shoreline and bunched around the narrow ferry landing, with more still arriving by boat.

The turquoise water is exactly as advertised. Room to stand in it is not.
A postcard with 5,000 people in it
Balos sits on the north-west tip of Crete and ranks among the island’s most photographed natural attractions.
It is also protected, forming part of the EU’s Natura 2000 network.
Local authorities say the lagoon takes around 4,000 to 5,000 visitors a day at peak season, arriving mostly by boat and along the rough access track that has become part of the trip’s folklore.
None of that reads as unusual on paper. It reads differently at ground level, which is what the clip captures: bodies, bags, boats, and a beach that has run out of beach.
Officials are talking about tickets
The Municipality of Kissamos is now considering tighter controls at the site, including an online booking system and a cap on daily visitor numbers.
Nothing has been signed off. The direction of travel is clear enough, and it mirrors what Santorini, Venice and Mount Fuji have already tried in various forms.
Not everyone agrees it’s ruined
The comments split fast. Some viewers treated the footage as evidence of a place already lost.
“[We] went there in september 2014 before tiktok and insta. it was like 50 people. loved it,” one wrote.
Another was blunter: “They have destroyed the most beautiful place! All for profit….”
Then came the dissent, delivered with full punctuation abandon: “Come on, it’s a magical place…it makes no difference if you share this joy with 1000 others, it’s still the same…imagine if Real Madrid wins the championship and not 1 person comes out on the streets…the joy is the same!!!!”
Why It Matters
Travel creators have spent a decade turning specific coordinates into content, and Balos is what that looks like at scale.
The clip that documents the crowd is also the clip that recruits the next one.
Creators working the destination beat are increasingly filming the queue rather than the view, partly because the queue is now the more honest shot, and partly because outrage travels further than serenity.
Greece has been tightening access to its most visited sites for several seasons, from cruise levies to timed entry at the Acropolis.
Balos joining that list would be less a policy shift than a formality.
Whether the booking system arrives before next summer is the only open question.
The footage will be there either way, doing its work.
