A ground handler at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport stopped mid-shift, lowered himself down beside a luggage cart and started talking to a French bulldog in a crate.

The dog’s owner was watching from the gate window, crying.

Martine Kjartansdottir had never flown with her dog Goku in the hold.

She spent the wait scanning the tarmac for him, which is how she found him: still crated, sitting on a luggage cart, with a KLM worker crouched beside him.

The handler leaned in, put both hands on the carrier and kept Goku company.

Then he got on with his shift.

Martine filmed the whole thing through the terminal glass.

She said: “I was flying for the first time with my dog in the hold and I was so nervous.

“I was looking for him while I stood at the gate.

“I then saw this amazing man who works in ground handling treating my dog so well.

“It made me tear up and made me feel very safe.”

Martine posted the footage to Goku’s Instagram account, with text over the top reading: “KLM, please give this man a pay rise.”

It has since passed 19.3 million views and 979,000 likes, as reported by Creatorzine.

KLM replied in the comments: “Thank you for capturing this beautiful moment.”

Which is not a pay rise.

What everyone else said

One viewer suggested a promotion instead: “Promote him to Senior Dog Assistant Specialist.”

A third simply wrote: “Sobbing.”

A fourth managed: “Cute.”

Another took the opportunity to make a broader point.

“Animals should be allowed in the cabin,” they wrote.

“They are much better behaved than most passengers these days.”

Why it matters

Pet accounts are among the most reliable growth engines on Instagram, and nothing performs quite like a stranger being unexpectedly kind to an animal.

Goku’s account didn’t need a format, a hook or a posting schedule for this one.

It needed a window seat view of a man doing his job properly.

For brands, this is the version of user-generated content money can’t reliably buy.

KLM got a goodwill moment built entirely by a passenger, starring an employee it presumably didn’t know was on camera, and its only job was to not ruin it in the replies.

Airlines have spent the last two years being filmed at their worst, usually by furious passengers holding a phone at chest height.

Clips like Goku’s cut the other way, and they travel further, because the supply is smaller.

Whether KLM ever names the handler is another question.

The internet has already decided he deserves something, and the internet does not usually let this go quickly.
