I moved to Hollywood with no connections – people shake my hand and ask my follower count before my NAME

Mercedes Blanche has 2.1 million Instagram followers, a part in The Boys and a Netflix film with Kevin Hart.

None of it has made Los Angeles easier to live in.

The Hungarian actor and comedian moved to the city seven years ago. Work found her quickly. Friendship hasn’t.

“It’s really, really hard to make friends in LA and I’m so thankful for the small group I have and trust,” she said, as reported by Creatorzine.

“The constant fakeness and people pretending to like you just to gain something, which happens all the time, makes forming genuine friendships really tough.”

The number that comes before your name

One statistic arrives ahead of anything personal.

“Sometimes I feel like if I don’t have enough followers people won’t talk to me,” Mercedes said.

“I’ve had people shake my hand and as they do, they’ll ask how many followers I have before they ask my name.

“It resets my brain. I really value my close friendships because I know that sort of attitude exists.”

Hiding her reaction isn’t an option.

“I’m so Eastern European, you can tell on my face if I don’t like something or someone.”

Budapest to Toronto to The Boys

Mercedes grew up in Budapest and left for Toronto just before her 18th birthday, straight out of school.

She completed a master’s in project management there. Before any of the acting, she worked as a nail technician.

A friendship with a casting director shifted everything.

In 2021 she landed a role in Amazon’s superhero drama The Boys.

A year later she appeared in Netflix’s The Man From Toronto alongside Kevin Hart, Woody Harrelson and Kaley Cuoco.

Social media, she says, opened 90% of the doors.

“It’s crazy how we’ve shifted from TV to social media – anyone can be famous now,” she said.

“Being well connected is everything in Hollywood. Coming from my background with no connections and no-one helping me, I’ve had to build everything brick by brick for myself.”

The performance of warmth is where she stops.

“But I’m very bad at faking it. I wouldn’t be the girl running up to someone shouting that I love them when I don’t even know who they are.

This happens a lot in LA and things can get really shady – fast.”

The set she wants to run

Mercedes is producing and casting her own comedy-horror film, NEURO-DIE-VIRGIN, and has spoken publicly about sexism, stereotyping and sexual harassment in the industry.

“I’m not alone in my bad experiences. But I will provide a set where none of this happens to other women, not on my watch,” she said.

“I love Hollywood and there are so many talented people – I can’t wait to give opportunities to unknown faces.”

A thousand nos

She calls the industry a rollercoaster ride, and admits the low points have been genuinely dark.

“I’ve felt all the emotions – doubting myself, questioning myself and there have been super, super dark moments but also very high moments and I need to find ways to enjoy the ride.”

Rejection used to flatten her.

“When I was in my early twenties, I was so sad when I got a rejection or when casting directors chose someone else over me.

I felt like my life was ruined and nothing was going to work out. But after you get a thousand nos, you become comfortable with rejection.”

Closer to thirty now, she says she lets things go faster.

Deadpan doesn’t translate

Her comedy runs dark and dry, which lands unevenly in America.

“People can’t tell if I’m joking or not and it’s difficult to master – being serious and still funny – the audience needs to understand when it’s a joke,” she said.

“European humour is much darker and drier – Americans don’t always realise I’m joking.

I’ve delivered a completely deadpan line and had people take me seriously because sarcasm doesn’t always translate.”

Eastern Europeans insult you with a straight face and expect you to enjoy it.

American humour tends to announce itself first. Confusing people, she says, is part of why her comedy works.

She notices who gets away with what, too.

“Male comedians are also treated differently to females – they say something sexual and it’s seen as funny, whereas I do the same and it’s ‘rude’.”

Why It Matters

The follower count has quietly replaced the business card.

Mercedes has both the audience and the credits, and the number still comes first in the room, which tells you something about where value sits now.

For creators building toward traditional industries, the metric that opens the door doesn’t stop being the thing people see.

It follows you into the social parts too.

Talent agencies and casting departments have been factoring audience size into decisions for years, in the way brands did first.

The result is a class of performer hired partly for reach, then measured by it permanently.

NEURO-DIE-VIRGIN is in production and casting, and she has made a public promise about how that set will run.

Worth watching whether the industry lets her keep it.
