There is a music room hidden in Charlotte Church’s garden, behind the banana plants, and it comes with its own toilet.
The singer and her husband, musician Jonathan Powell, have put their four-bedroom Welsh cottage on the market for £695,000.
The house dates to the mid-1600s and is thought to be among the oldest in Barry’s Old Village, which is the sort of detail that usually arrives with low ceilings and a sense of compromise.

The house that doesn’t look like the house
From the pavement, the semi-detached cottage gives away almost nothing.
Church and Powell call it a “real Tardis”, as reported by Creatorzine, and the layout backs them up.
Three reception rooms sit inside. The first has exposed beams, a fireplace and the original staircase.
A central hallway opens into a family room with a log burner and patio doors, which runs into a dining kitchen fitted with integrated appliances, patterned tiles and wooden worktops.
The third reception room keeps a second log burner, exposed floors, another historic staircase and an original bread oven.
Four bedrooms upstairs, plus a family bathroom and a separate shower room.
One bedroom has an en suite and doors onto a flat roof, which the couple have used for sunbathing and sea views.
The main bedroom holds handmade bespoke wardrobes.
The bit at the bottom of the garden
Two substantial garden rooms have been converted.
One is a teenage den. The other is a private music space, plumbed.
The garden around them took its cues from the couple’s travels in Morocco and Africa: banana plants, fruit-bearing shrubs, herbs, heavily scented flowers.
There is a raised barbecue area under a pergola, a covered outdoor space, lawn, patio, workshop and storage sheds, plus parking for four cars on the driveway.
“We love the spirit of the house; it feels alive and balanced, with everything in its right place,” Church and Powell said.
The seafront is walkable. Romilly Park, Cold Knap Lake and Gardens and Porthkerry Country Park all sit nearby.
Why It Matters
Creatorzine editorial framing. The home studio has quietly become a property feature rather than a hobby, and estate agents have started selling it as one.
Musicians, podcasters and full-time YouTubers now buy houses partly on whether a corner of them can be soundproofed, and listings increasingly lead with the outbuilding rather than the kitchen.
A garden room with plumbing is a workspace. It is also a line item.
Church herself has spent the past few years working largely outside the major label system, running her own retreat and wellness projects, which makes a private music space at the end of the garden less of a luxury and more of an office.
What happens next
Church and Powell are understood to have bought the cottage around 2024, after selling The Spinney, their six-bedroom mansion in nearby Dinas Powys.
She bought that house for £1.3 million following her split from Wales rugby player Gavin Henson in 2010, renovated it extensively and married Powell there in 2017.
It reportedly sold for £2.1 million in 2024.
She has said the move to Barry was partly about being closer to family.
The cottage is listed with Fine & Country, South Wales, at a guide price of £695,000.
Whoever buys it inherits the banana plants.
