I set my alarm for 6.30am to beat the Santorini crowds – there were already THOUSANDS of them

Tayyba Adeel set her alarm for 6.30am to beat the Santorini crowds. Instead she found a queue of thousands, a bride in her dress, and no actual view at all.

The queue for Santorini’s most photographed blue dome starts before the sun does.

Tayyba Adeel worked that out at 6.30am, when she walked up expecting an empty street and instead joined a line she says ran into the thousands.

She had set the alarm for the shot everyone gets.

Whitewashed walls, blue dome, sunrise coming up behind it. Cinematic.

What she filmed instead was herself walking the length of a queue, past tourist after tourist, every one of them waiting for the same frame.

“The famous Santorini blue dome photo spot at 6:30am,” she wrote over the clip.

“The whole internet got the same travel tip.”

The video has since passed 110,000 views.

Partway along, a woman sat in her wedding dress with her photographer beside her, waiting her turn like everybody else.

Adeel’s own verdict landed harder than the footage did.

“Social media ruined it (Santorini),” she said.

“You only see people without noticing the beauty of the place.”

Viewers took it personally

The comments were not sympathetic. One imagined living with it: “I’d be p*ssed if this was outside my home or rental.”

Another kept it to four words. “What a waste of a holiday.”

Someone else went further and wrote the island off entirely.

“This makes me never want to go to Santorini. Why do people just ruin everything for likes on social media.”

And one commenter asked the question the queue rather invites: “Surely there’s a better way to spend your time on holiday than that?”

3.4 million people, one dome

Santorini takes around 3.4 million visitors a year.

The island’s permanent population is roughly 15,500.

That gap is the whole story. The blue domes, the cave houses and the sunsets that built the island’s reputation now come with a wait, and the wait starts before dawn because everyone read the same advice about beating the crowds.

Why It Matters

Travel content has a habit of eating itself.

A location goes viral, the video becomes the recommendation, and the recommendation removes the exact thing that made the location worth filming.

Scarcity is the product. Reach destroys it.

Creators working the destination niche are increasingly aware that a “hidden gem” is a depreciating asset with a shelf life measured in months.

There’s a neater lesson buried in Adeel’s clip, though.

The sunrise photo she went for would have been one of tens of thousands.

The video of the queue got 110,000 views. The crowd was better content than the view.

Santorini has been near the centre of Europe’s overtourism argument for a while now, alongside Venice, Barcelona and Mallorca, with Greek authorities introducing a levy on cruise passengers docking at the busiest islands.

Local frustration is running well ahead of any policy fix.

Next July the dome will still be there.

So will the alarm at 6.30am, and the queue, and somebody filming it.
