Three songs into his headline slot at Frankfurt’s biggest 80s festival, Boy George pulled out his earpiece, told 28,000 people the sound was “f*cking ridiculous” and suggested somebody might be doing it on purpose.
Then he sang without music, said goodnight and left.
The booing started before he reached the wings.

Three songs, one earpiece, one very short set
The 65-year-old took the stage at Die 80er Live on 8 August, sharing a bill at Deutsche Bank Park with Holly Johnson, Kim Wilde, Alphaville, ABC and Tony Hadley.

It fell apart quickly. He got through Church Of The Poisoned Mind and It’s A Miracle, gesturing at the sound desk between numbers.
Footage filmed by fan Marco Scherer shows him with his back to the audience, talking to technicians.
“It’s really loud in my ears; I’ve had to take this out,” he said.
Then, less diplomatically: “I don’t know if it’s some sort of sabotage situation… it’s fcking ridiculous. The full fcking time.”
He turned round, smiled at the crowd, and kept going anyway.
“I’ve been the same since 1982, and I’ve never changed and I never will.”
The next song lasted seconds before he waved the band down again.
“If that’s what’s going to go down – I’ll do it without the f*cking music.”
His backing singers covered for him. A guitarist joined in.
He walked back towards the mic stand mid-vocal, managed a short “goodnight thank you”, and went.
The man who came for him specifically
Scherer, 48, had travelled from Koblenz.
“I had really been looking forward to seeing Boy George,” he told CreatorZine.
“He was one of the headline acts. I had actually gone to the event specifically for him.”
“After he left the stage, the entire audience booed loudly. You can also see how shocked his backing singers were.”
Holly Johnson closed the festival. That part went fine.
The post he took down
Two days later Boy George answered a German newspaper’s write-up on X, calling the opening song a car crash and saying it made no sense because the sound had been set earlier that day.
He said he asked for the levels to come down after song two and they went up instead.

An earlier post had gone considerably further, accusing the monitor engineers of deliberate sabotage and claiming he could recognise the smell of it after this many years.
He deleted that one. When a fan reposted a screenshot, he replied that he’d taken it down because the cause would always remain a mystery, and asked them not to share it because he had enough hate to deal with already. Far Out Magazine
Nobody from the promoter, the venue or his own team has publicly answered the accusation.
Why It Matters
The only reason this story exists in English is that a 48-year-old from Koblenz had his phone out.
Scherer’s footage went to a wire agency, the agency sold it on, and his version of the night became the version of the night, quoted back to millions of people who weren’t there. That’s the supply chain now.
The paying customer doubles as camera crew, eyewitness and licensor, usually for money that wouldn’t cover the ticket.
Boy George then did what everyone does when they own their own distribution.
He posted, escalated, reconsidered, deleted, and discovered that the deletion travelled further than the post.
Controlling your own channel means publishing every draft of your reaction in front of the people you’re reacting to.
Nostalgia bills like Die 80er Live run on shared production, which means the desk usually belongs to the promoter rather than the artist.
His advice to hire your own crew is sound. It’s also advice most acts on a seven-name lineup have no realistic way of taking.
What happens next is a monitor engineer question.
Whether the one standing behind him at the next festival is his, he hasn’t said.
Neither has anyone in Frankfurt, and he’s already told everyone he expects it to stay a mystery.
